hermann weekend diary

for complete pics, see my to flickr account

this weekend we went to hermann, mo. it's an old small little german town, located about 40 minutes southwest of st. louis. life is made to slow down there - there's no interstate or fast food close by. the town is small enough to walk everywhere. this month they have Oktoberfest. we went to a few nearby wineries & local breweries. we also walked, slept and read A LOT. it was a much needed slow down weekend.

we took a drive up to the bias winery, the road leading to the place would be what nightmares are made of at night. beautiful, yes, but wierd. the smallest 2 lane highway i've ever been on, corn fields to your immediate left, train track to your right. small towns of 15 houses you pass thru are filled with street front bars (in houses no less). and the one lane dirt road leading to the actual winery was a trip. anyhoo - we get there and get served a wine sampler of about half a sip each - in dixie cups. (which was fine, every wine tasted like boons farm...). the beer sampler (pictured) was served on a hot pink plastic tray, and in dixie cups on top of a paper labeled with each beer type. fabulous. everyone here was taking turns karaoke singing on the stage set before us. solo dancing. and then, our beer tasted like cardboard. every single one. with all this said, it was the most entertaining and dreamlike, unreal small town feel i was having, and i was soaking it all up because i knew i'd probably never be surrounded by a situation like this again...

stone hill winery - a beautiful little winery...small in comparison to the santa barbara wineries we've seen, but quaint and cute.

this was the bar we entertained ourselves at on the first night in hermann. we people watched. it was the craziest mix of people i've seen in a while. people dancing to puddle of mudd and gangster rap. good times...and laughs...
